For certain horny adolescents, a first vampire crush is akin to a first love: Right or wrong, it sets a baseline for all future suitors. \u201cThe Vampire Lestat\u201d was my gateway into the late Anne Rice\u2019s \u201cVampire Chronicles,\u201d skewing my loyalty toward Team Lestat regardless of how hard his ex, Louis de Pointe du Lac, dragged him in \u201cInterview with the Vampire.\u201d<\/p>

Louis had plenty of reasons for doing his maker dirty in \u201cInterview,\u201d like the fact that Lestat de Lioncourt was emotionally withholding and manipulative. But in the 1985 novel told from his point of view, he\u2019s reborn as a rock star, emerging from a long, depressive slumber just in time to seduce the MTV generation. Lestat is handsome and wealthy, with extraordinary powers and musical talent so undeniable that they awaken the queen of vampires.<\/p>\n

Louis, in comparison, is kinda busted \u2014\u00a0gloomy, tortured, unable to fully embrace the everlasting banquet Lestat has laid out for him.<\/p>\n

Bear in mind, this is the perspective of an awkward wallflower surrounded by too-cool gothlings clutching well-worn copies of Rice\u2019s books. To an incurably good girl who secretly wanted to break bad, Lestat isn\u2019t only (un)living the dream, he embodies it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Teenagers everywhere fell under the spell of Rice\u2019s vampires in the mid-\u201880s with an ardor that AMC\u2019s \u201cThe Vampire Lestat\u201d radiates through the devotion of his superfans. To them, the music of Lestat, played by Sam Reid, floats their souls as closely to eternity as the psychedelics some gobble down like SweeTarts. Draining a few isn\u2019t enough to make them renounce their loyalty to his congregation, known as the Beautiful Unwell. That\u2019s real rock star power, the kind that remade every blood-drinker that slinked forth since Lestat took center stage for the first time.<\/p>\n

Vampires have long been entwined with sex and death. Before \u201cInterview with the Vampire\u201d and \u201cThe Vampire Lestat,\u201d Hammer Film Productions\u2019 gothic horror movies made \u201cDracula\u201d their standard bearer. But the pansexual Lestat de Lioncourt transformed them into rebellious, romantic figures, the stuff of adolescent FOMO, as opposed to decaying ghouls.<\/p>\n

In movies, he\u2019s been played by Tom Cruise in the original \u201cInterview with the Vampire,\u201d and Stuart Townsend in \u201cQueen of the Damned.\u201d His made-for-TV version is the most enchanting of all, though. Reid\u2019s Lestat sings, gyrates, gets blood drunk and trashes hotel rooms like a prom king \u2014 one channeling a bit of \u201cStooges\u201d-era Iggy Pop mixed with the flamboyance of T. Rex\u2019s Marc Bolan, swanning about with an assortment of temporary bedfellows. There was a time many of us would have died, literally, to be in Lestat\u2019s orbit. And creator and showrunner Rolin Jones knows it.<\/p>\n

Reid\u2019s Lestat and Jacob Anderson\u2019s Louis are for the adults raised on Rice\u2019s novels \u2014 not the so-called \u201ckidults\u201d of recent yesteryear, but the Olds who can still channel their teen spirit without the assistance of a Mayfair witch. If you\u2019re feverish for the kind of crotch rock Reid\u2019s been teasing in the many previews promoting the show, you probably came of age when vampires were served up with sides of sex, intoxication and lawlessness.<\/p>\n

Joel Schumacher\u2019s 1987 classic, \u201cThe Lost Boys,\u201d became the first of its era to deliver a vision closer to Rice\u2019s \u2014 save for Kathryn Bigelow\u2019s cult classic, \u201cNear Dark,\u201d which came out later the same year.<\/p>\n

One of its writers, James Jeremias, was loosely inspired by \u201cInterview,\u201d which may be why Kiefer Sutherland\u2019s rebellious vampire, David, feels spiritually closer to Lestat than the sparkly fang boys of \u201cThe Twilight Saga.\u201d<\/p>

Stephenie Meyer\u2019s Edward Cullen is as much a creature of the comparatively chaste aughts as Lestat evokes the materialistic, fame-hungry \u201880s. In the wake of \u201cTwilight\u201d came the TV adaptation of \u201cThe Vampire Diaries\u201d novels and their love affair between a teenage girl named Elena (Nina Dobrev) and two ancient undead beefcakes named Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). Before Edward and Bella took over the world, \u201cBuffy the Vampire Slayer\u201d viewers ached for David Boreanaz\u2019s Angel and James Marsters\u2019 Spike, centuries-old bros who fall for a very special high school blonde. For some reason, the relationships between these much, much older men and teenage girls don\u2019t seem taboo when the age gap spans centuries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Anyway, it could be grosser. (It can always<\/em> be grosser! ) In \u201cThe Vampire Lestat,\u201d the namesake idol\u2019s cry for companionship is answered by Gabrielle (Jennifer Ehle), his mother in life who becomes his lover after he turns her. Rice\u2019s readers might not have been quite so queasy about this; her antihero has a way of making many horrors palatable. The show, thank goodness, eventually addresses that ickiness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

By that point, Reid\u2019s red-soaked rocker has us in his thrall, possibly stomping down any unease you may have about that coupling. (\u201cGame of Thrones\u201d hardened people to incest many years ago, sad to say.)<\/p>\n

The 1980s had a lot in common with today, including a permissiveness that allowed powerful celebrities like Lestat to escape consequences. But thanks to Reid\u2019s indefatigable charisma, this vampire sidesteps the resentment millions hold for real-life bloodsuckers by inviting us behind the velvet curtain. If you could get away with half of the artistic and legal felonies Lestat does and look fantastic doing it, you probably would . . . wouldn\u2019t you?<\/p>\n

This unspoken desire hides deep in the catacombs of our juvenile vampire fantasies, an awareness that this fleeting time of youth and beauty coincides with tremendous anxiety, confusion and parentally imposed restrictions. Vampires, like rock stars, are the ultimate free spirits released from morality and the laws binding humans who can\u2019t afford expensive lawyers.<\/p>\n

Creatures ruled by bloodlust are not so different from teenagers, come to think of it. Both can be wild, id-driven, defiant beasts confident in their invincibility. In an amoral age, when so little of what\u2019s seen and said is believable, rules are virtually obsolete. This is where we find Lestat in Season 3, preaching the gospel that this is his<\/em> time.<\/p>\n

Lestat tears down The Devil\u2019s Road, thrilling crowds at mid-sized venues in towns like Detroit, Toronto and Toledo, Ohio, while purring about ennui and excess to Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian), a newly made vampire resurrected, career-wise, as a documentarian. Lestat is slightly bored with existing yet curious to see whether his music, primarily plied on the Internet, can reach enough undead followers to hasten the vampire apocalypse known as The Great Conversion.<\/p>\n

\n

Beyond all this is his afterlife\u2019s driving existential question. \u201cWhy do I actively, manically pursue failure?\u201d he asks. The show leaves this open, which is fine by me. I\u2019d happily tag along for more delirious seasons as he searches for answers. Sometimes, rousing our dormant inner adolescent is a job for a very old monster with a rock and roll heart where his soul should be.<\/p>
