New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani shared his thoughts on a viral chant celebrating the New York Knicks title run on Sunday.<\/p>\n

MS Now\u2018s Jacob Soboroff played Mamdani the rhyming boast that begin\u2019s \u201cMy mayor\u2019s Muslim, my bagel\u2019s Jewish.\u201d Soboroff asked the mayor if he\u2019d met the originator of the phrase. Mamdani admitted he hadn\u2019t, but said \u201chis words have really stayed with all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks to him, there are a lot of people who have been running up to me over the last few weeks just shouting at me, \u2018My mayor\u2019s Muslim!’\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s true, I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The original version of the chant concluded with \u201cmy Christian Dior, Knicks in four,\u201d the former line being a reference to late New York rapper Pop Smoke and the latter boasting that the Jalen Brunson-led Knicks would sweep the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs were able to win one game in this series, so the chant was altered to \u201ceven the Pope\u2019s on our side, Knicks in five.\u201d \u00a0The Knicks secured their first NBA title in over 50 years with a win over the Spurs on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Mamdani, who was wearing a Knicks jersey underneath his suit jacket, shared his view of the celebration throughout New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was the same thing, no matter what part of the city you were in,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing more you can ask for\u2026 It\u2019s honestly a beautiful thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani said that the Knicks run turned the nation\u2019s largest city into \u201cwhat feels like the world\u2019s smallest town.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone is thinking and hoping and praying for the same thing,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd now, here we are. We\u2019re just pinching ourselves and asking, \u2018Is it real?’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
