Grammy Award-winning \u201cQueen of Percussion\u201d Sheila E. joined host Kenneth Womack to talk about her \u201cglamorous life\u201d and career and much more on the Season 8 finale of \u201cEverything Fab Four,\u201d a podcast co-produced by me and Womack (a music scholar who also writes about pop music for Salon) and distributed by Salon.<\/p>\n

The daughter of legendary (and according to her, \u201cbest dressed\u201d) Latin jazz percussionist Pete Escovedo, Sheila said she grew up in the most \u201cmusical family\u201d with an \u201cextensive vinyl collection.\u201d As she told Womack, \u201cMy dad practiced every single day. There were always jam sessions with percussion players and entire bands in my living room . . . It was a normal thing. My siblings and I didn\u2019t realize it was cool until we were teens,\u201d she said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Between her family\u2019s connections and living in the San Francisco Bay Area at the time, Sheila attended rehearsals for acts such as Santana, Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead. Having already picked up percussion, she was eventually able to sit in and play with them alongside her father and uncles. But prior to those mid- to late-1960s sessions, Sheila \u201cfell in love\u201d with The Beatles after seeing their debut on \u201cThe Ed Sullivan Show\u201d in \u201864 \u2013 as did her mother and father. \u201cI had the coolest, hippest parents in the world,\u201d she said. \u201cThey were like, we\u2019re watching this!\u201d<\/p>\n
