Beyond its ongoing efforts to intimidate the media, the educational system and civil society more broadly, the Trump administration is now targeting how knowledge itself is produced.<\/span><\/p>\n

The National Institutes of Health and related programs award roughly $50 billion annually in research support. Since World War II, these investments have helped make the U.S. a global science leader. They are a strategic investment in America\u2019s economy, public health and international power.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, in an apparent violation of the First Amendment, the administration is trying to fund only research it deems \u201cpro-American.\u201d If<\/span> these changes are enacted<\/span>, political loyalists \u2014 not scientists and experts \u2014 would be<\/span> put in charge of the grant approval process<\/span>. Research could also be terminated at any point if the administration decides that it is \u201canti-American\u201d or otherwise does not align with the priorities of the president and the executive branch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since Trump\u2019s return to power, <\/span>a growing number<\/span> of American scientists<\/span> have moved to Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe. This <\/span>\u201cbrain drain\u201d<\/span> may take decades to recover from.<\/span><\/p>\n

The broader implications of this move are clear and ominous: Trumpism is no longer \u201cjust\u201d authoritarianism. It is a totalitarian project seeking to control every aspect of American life \u2014 including how Americans think and what they are allowed to know.<\/span><\/p>\n
