Odysseus may have held out hope throughout years of setbacks, obstacles and traps laid by vengeful deities, but the man who plays him on the big screen is no optimist.<\/p>\n

Even if Christopher Nolan\u2018s film adaptation of \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d is a smash hit, Matt Damon doesn\u2019t think we\u2019ll see a boom in epics of a similar scale. Damon told the Times of London that shrinking revenues in Hollywood make it extremely unlikely for a studio to put up the money needed to film these massive movies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just risk aversion,\u201d Damon said. \u201cIt\u2019s a brutal business \u2014 you are better off putting your money into treasury bills, historically, so it\u2019s hard for studios.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Damon has explained the decline of mid-sized movies and outsized epics in other venues. He famously explained how streaming media left massive holes in studio spreadsheets on an episode of \u201cHot Ones.\u201d Once studios couldn\u2019t count on a second bump of revenue beyond the box office, they began selecting safer films based on pre-existing properties that were guaranteed to get people into movie theaters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose medium-sized films I loved \u2014 like courtroom dramas, family dramas \u2014 are just so hard to get made, and it is the same with something of <\/span>The Odyssey<\/em>\u2019s scale too,\u201d he told the Times. \u201cYou are just putting such a big bet out there. It\u2019s a gamble\u2026 I can\u2019t imagine the stars aligning in a way that would put me in this situation again, and I have always wanted to do this sort of film.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Damon\u2019s co-star Tom Holland is slightly more hopeful. While he agreed that a film on the same scale would be a \u201cstruggle,\u201d he\u2019s hopeful that younger directors will take something from the upcoming film.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cChris probably hopes there will be films inspired by it. He\u2019s a spokesperson for the importance of cinema, community, and so we may not get another <\/span>Odyssey<\/em>, or swords and sandals, but somebody might, for instance, shoot on IMAX,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n
