A mere 64 years after their debut, The Rolling Stones make their bravura return with \u201cForeign Tongues,\u201d their 25th studio album. While \u201cBlue\u201d and \u201cLonesome\u201d (2016) may still be their elderly high-water mark, \u201cForeign Tongues\u201d is chock-full of the brand of good-time rock \u2018n\u2019 roll that we\u2019ve come to expect from the Stones.<\/p>\n

Music lovers will fondly recall the band\u2019s artistic heyday \u2014 namely, their quartet of Jimmy Miller-produced masterworks in \u201cBeggars Banquet\u201d (1968), \u201cLet It Bleed\u201d (1969), \u201cSticky Fingers\u201d (1971) and \u201cExile on Main St.\u201d (1972) \u2014 which had been offset by several late-period misfires. But in recent years, they have rediscovered their mettle.<\/p>\n

Building on the creative strides of \u201cHackney Diamonds,\u201d their 24th studio effort, \u201cForeign Tongues\u201d oozes with soulful R&B and high-octane rock. \u201cForeign Tongues\u201d also marks the band\u2019s second LP with Steve Jordan handling drum duties in place of the late Charlie Watts. Although it\u2019s still hard to imagine The Rolling Stones without their steadfast timekeeper, Jordan is certainly up to the task. Purists will be delighted by the inclusion of \u201cHit Me in the Head,\u201d which Watts performed shortly before his death in 2021.<\/p>\n

As always, when it comes to the music, the Stones don\u2019t pull any punches. The album\u2019s lead single, \u201cIn the Stars,\u201d finds guitarist Keith Richards laying down a fiery riff against Mick Jagger\u2019s raw and affecting lead vocals. By this point, it\u2019s become rote. After all, it\u2019s a formula that has worked for nigh on six decades.<\/p>\n

As with \u201cHackney Diamonds,\u201d the new album is filled to the brim with special guests, including Paul McCartney, who performs a groovy bass line on \u201cCovered in You,\u201d one of \u201cForeign Tongues\u201d\u2018 standout tunes. With a wink in his voice, Jagger sings, \u201cThis never gets old,\u201d a fabulously ironic admission from a musician who began his career during an era when rockers couldn\u2019t fathom the notion of working in their 30s, much less as an octogenarian.<\/p>\n

In addition to McCartney, \u201cForeign Tongues\u201d features such luminaries as Steve Winwood, who plays keyboards on the lion\u2019s share of the album\u2019s tracks, along with The Cure\u2019s Robert Smith, who plays a mean guitar on \u201cDivine Intervention,\u201d and the Red Hot Chili Peppers\u2019 Chad Smith, who good-naturedly plays the bass drum on \u201cBeautiful Delilah,\u201d the LP\u2019s closing number. Even megastar Bruno Mars joins in on the fun, gamely rapping the cowbell on \u201cNever Wanna Lose You.\u201d<\/p>\n

But for all of the Stones\u2019 gusto, it\u2019s the cover versions that find them at their sizzling best. Their cover of Amy Winehouse\u2019s \u201cYou Know I\u2019m No Good,\u201d one of the late singer\u2019s trademark vocals, finds Jagger turning in his finest performance on the album. \u201cForeign Tongues\u201d pointedly concludes with Chuck Berry\u2019s \u201cBeautiful Delilah\u201d as an homage of sorts to the forefathers who made the band\u2019s existence possible in the first place. If Berry\u2019s track proves to be the Stones\u2019 final utterance, they will have concluded an illustrious career in fine style.<\/p>\n
