Sen. Lindsey Graham\u2019s sudden death on Saturday stirred up a mess of feelings. Analysts pondered his transformation from bipartisan negotiator to Donald Trump toady. A few people pulled muscles while straining to label him a \u201clion of the Senate.\u201d But my first concern was, \u201cWhat\u2019s gonna happen to Mee-Maw?\u201d<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re unfamiliar with the reference, Mee-Maw is the chicken-fried Greek chorus that \u201cLate Night with Seth Meyers\u201d concocted to hound Graham whenever he excused Trump\u2019s corruption. Initially introduced as an invisible scene partner for Meyers to scream-drawl at during his cornpone impersonations of the Republican gentleman from South Carolina, Mee-Maw evolved into a Southern gothic performance piece.<\/p>\n

She could be infantilizing (\u201cMee-Maw! I\u2019m a grown man! I don\u2019t take baths with you anymore, Mee-Maw!\u201d) or humbling (\u201cMy Mee-Maw keeps telling me no one\u2019s ever going to come to my parties. Maybe they\u2019d come if you\u2019d stay in your room instead of traipsing around the dinner table with your nightgown half-open!\u201d). She baked biscuits worth defending, yet pooh-poohed her grandson\u2019s Broadway dreams.<\/p>\n

Despite all the power Graham amassed, Mee-Maw was always hovering nearby to remind lil\u2019 Lindsey that he was never too good to clean her hemorrhoid donut.<\/p>\n

I had my fingers crossed that \u201cLate Night\u201d would haul out Mee-Maw for one last jig when it returned on Monday. Alas, the old girl couldn\u2019t compete with the assortment of crises that transpired during the show\u2019s three-week hiatus, including the once-in-a-lifetime comedy opportunity presented by explosive headlines about explosive diarrhea. \u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t want to keep talking about it,\u201d Meyers admitted during Monday\u2019s \u201cA Closer Look\u201d segment, \u201cbut as the host of a late-night comedy show, I am contractually obligated!\u201d<\/p>\n

Just as well. Now that Graham\u2019s gone, it\u2019s only fitting that his imaginary grandma rest her bewigged skeleton in that great rocking chair in the sky. \u2018Night, Mee-Maw. Regardless of how you showed up, you were a brilliant antagonist for a morally flexible opportunist.<\/p>\n
